It’s crucial that patients understand that if they’re breathing through their mouth, all the bacteria in the air is going straight into their throat, and that this can potentially cause upper respiratory tract infections. Ensure that they understand that the nose acts as a filter when breathed through, which often lessens the chance of infection.
The result of correcting these habits along with regular MRC appliance use is straighter teeth and improved facial development. Patients must also understand the importance of swallowing correctly.
The patient must learn how to swallow correctly and position the tongue in the correct place in the mouth. Just wearing an appliance without having improved poor muscle function and myofunctional habits is not enough.
Myofunctional orthodontics aims to improve muscle function and allow for correct development, not just to straighten teeth, although the teeth do end up straight. It’s preferable for the patients to avoid the need for retainers, but this is not always achievable for every patient.
As with any treatment that uses a removable appliance, patient compliance is essential. If the patient is compliant then good results usually follow.
